Quilting Arts Magazine® and Cloth Paper Scissors® Increase Publication to Bi-monthly

November 2006

Stow, Massachusetts – At a time when many print publications are folding, Quilting Arts Magazine and Cloth Paper Scissors are expanding from a quarterly to bi-monthly production schedule. Both magazines are published by Quilting Arts, LLC, in Stow, Massachusetts.

The expansion follows the news that Quilting Arts Magazine and Cloth Paper Scissors each ranks first in their category by sales and volume among craft magazines sold by Borders Books and Music, based on figures from the bookseller for the fiscal year June 2005 through May 2006. Quilting Arts Magazine rank is based on dollar sales and number of copies sold among all quilting magazines (28 total titles) carried by Borders while Cloth Paper Scissors, is first in dollar sales and number of copies sold among all paper craft magazines (58 titles in all). Among all craft magazines (277 titles), Cloth Paper Scissors ranks 6th and Quilting Arts ranks 13th.

“There are no other magazines quite like Quilting Arts and Cloth Paper Scissors,” says John Bolton, publisher of the two magazines. “Fiber artists, crafters, and hobbyists of all skill levels praise us for our innovative (yet easy to follow) how-to articles and beautiful photography of some of the finest and most exciting art from around the globe. Our readers continually tell us that we are unique in the marketplace, so it only makes sense that we give them more of what they already love.”

Quilting Arts Magazine was born six years ago from creator and Editor-in-Chief Patricia Bolton’s passion for creative contemporary art quilting. When she could find no publication that focused exclusively on this growing style of quilting, the former special needs teacher and her husband John, an attorney, started their own magazine.

In the year 2000, Quilting Arts Magazine clearly responded to a pent-up demand and was an immediate hit, selling out the initial press run of 5,000 copies. Sales for the quarterly publication continued to rise steadily from there.

In 2004, Patricia and John saw that many artists with quilting and fiber arts backgrounds were now incorporating more paper and other media into their work, creating fiber books, assemblages with found objects and metal, and other fiber-based, mixed-media art. The Boltons launched Cloth Paper Scissors®, also a quarterly, in the fall of 2004. Cloth Paper Scissors has also met with steady growth.

Currently, Quilting Arts Magazine and Cloth Paper Scissors have a combined circulation of 195,000 worldwide, per issue.
